Arab League joins international surveillance over Lebanese elections

BEIRUT, April 11 -- The Arab league (AL) informed the Lebanese

government on Saturday that the AL will participate in surveillance over the

upcoming general elections on June 7, local Elnashra website reported.

AL assistant secretary general, Ambassador Abdulrahman Soloh, officially

assigned by AL chief Amr Mousa, informed Lebanese interior minister Ziad Baroud

that the AL would participate in and accompany the Lebanese general elections,

in cooperation with international institutions, the report said.

"After the Arab league sponsored the elections of a consensus president in

Lebanon, it is seeking today to reinforce democracy and rebuilt the state of law

and institutions through participating in the surveillance of the general

elections," Ambassador Soloh was quoted as telling minister Baroud.

Lebanese consensus President Michel Suleiman was elected last May after an

Arab sponsored agreement was signed on May 21 in the Qatari capital Doha between

Lebanese rival leaders.
